Living Memory of Areias

Local: Areias (SP)
Organization: Angellito Arte Caffé

The Challenge: Areias holds a history of rare depth — built heritage from the coffee era, traditions shaped by centuries of convergence between indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans, and Europeans, memories scattered across generations. The challenge was to recover that affective universe before it faded beyond reach: to identify what still pulses within the city, give form to what lies dormant, and bring that repertoire closer to Areias’ youth, so they could recognize in their past the raw material of their future.

Our Solution: Garimpo de Soluções contributed to the project’s conception, heritage mapping, and decoding of Areias’ affective universe — turning dispersed memories into living narrative. From this process emerged Memória Viva de Areias, selected from more than 600 submissions in a public call by the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture, Economy and Creative Industries. The project combines historical research, interviews with local memory keepers, and the publication of a book featuring 18 stories written in language accessible to primary school children. Drawing on the icons brought to life through those stories, Angelito Ramos created a handcrafted memory game that carries the city’s intangible heritage into classrooms and homes alike. The project also encompasses the drafting, advocacy, and legislative passage of a bill to establish heritage education as mandatory content in Areias’ municipal schools — ensuring that this reunion with local history becomes lasting public policy.
