Living Memory of Areias

Local: Areias (SP)
Organization: Angellito Arte Caffé

The Challenge: Areias holds a remarkably rich and layered history — an architectural heritage shaped by the coffee era, traditions forged through the convergence of Indigenous peoples, enslaved people, and Europeans, and memories scattered across generations. The challenge was to recover this emotional and cultural universe before it faded away entirely: to identify what still pulses through the city, give shape to what remains dormant, and bring this heritage closer to the young people of Areias, enabling them to recognize in their past the raw material for their future.

Our Solution: Garimpo de Soluções worked on the project’s conception, heritage mapping, and the decoding of Areias’ emotional and cultural landscape — transforming scattered memories into a living narrative. This process of social historiography gave rise to Memória Viva de Areias, selected from more than 600 proposals in a public call by the São Paulo State Secretariat for Culture, Economy and Creative Industries.
The project brought together historical research, interviews with guardians of local memory, and the publication of a book featuring 18 stories written in language accessible to elementary school children. Drawing on the icons and symbols identified through these stories, Angelito Ramos created a handcrafted memory game that brings the city’s intangible cultural heritage into classrooms and homes.

The project also culminated in the drafting, coordination, and legislative processing of a bill to establish heritage education as content to be addressed in Areias’ municipal schools — ensuring that this reconnection with the city’s own history becomes a permanent public policy.
